Kumar Rocker (shoulder) is expecting to throw a bullpen at some point next week.
Rocker was placed on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement on April 23, and the hope is the right-hander will avoided a lengthy stint on the injured list. If he is able to throw a bullpen there’s a chance he won’t need to make a rehab start, but obviously much will be determined by how he feels after the throwing session.
Rangers’ skipper Bruce Bochy told reporters on Thursday that Kumar Rocker will be placed on the injured list with a mild right shoulder impingement.
Rocker turned in his worst start of the season in Wednesday’s loss to the Athletics, giving up five runs in just 1 2/3 innings of work. With Jack Leiter (blister) almost ready to return to the Rangers’ rotation, it’s possible that Rocker would have been bumped from his spot anyways, but this seals the deal. Now word yet on how long the Rangers expect him to be shelved for.
Kumar Rocker allowed five runs over 1 2/3 innings while taking a loss to the Athletics on Wednesday.
Rocker gave up four runs in the first inning, and walked in another in the second before exiting. The 25-year-old has alternated solid outings with clunkers to begin the year, and unfortunately, this one clunked after seven innings of three-run baseball his last time out. His ERA is now an unsightly 8.10, and the right-hander offers plenty of risk — with some potential reward — in a schedule rematch against the Athletics next week.
Kumar Rocker recorded his first MLB victory after pitching seven innings of three-run ball and striking out eight Thursday against the Angels.
Rocker walked none and surrendered just one double and four singles. Unfortunately, all five hits came in the first and fifth innings, resulting in three runs between them. Still, Rocker was terrific in needing just 78 pitches to get 21 outs. It’s the kind of performance that suggests he might offer mixed-league value at some point. We just wouldn’t trust him quite yet. His next start will come in Sacramento against the A’s.
