He continues to start at second base, which gives him a chance to be called up with Ketel Marte (hamstring) sidelined. However, despite the talk that Lawlar could play third base for Arizona, he has played only two games there this season, while starting nine at second base and five at shortstop. It remains unclear if the Diamondbacks will call him up if Ketel Marte is tracking to return to the lineup soon.

The 22-year-old now has two home runs on the season to go along with a .295/.403/.492 slash line and four steals in 15 Triple-A games. The Diamondbacks have started to use him at second base in recent games, which suggests a call-up could be imminent with Ketel Marte (hamstring) on the IL. Marte may only be out for a couple of weeks, so Lawlar would need to hit enough in his first few MLB games to convince the Diamondbacks to keep him on the roster, but he has enough fantasy upside to be worth modest bids if he does get the call.

The interesting wrinkle here for fantasy managers, even in re-draft formats, is that Lawlar has played the last couple games at second base. There’s optimism Ketel Marte (hamstring) will be ready to return by late April or early May, but there’s an opening for the 22-year-old top prospect to potentially come up for a couple weeks as a stopgap solution. He’ll contribute across all five categories from a fantasy standpoint once he establishes himself at the highest level, which makes him a top-20 range prospect for dynasty purposes.

This always seemed likely after Geraldo Perdomo signed his contract extension earlier in the sprint. Injuries limited Lawlar to just 23 minor league games in 2024, so the team wants him to play regularly at the start of the season, and the best place for that is in Triple-A right now. Perdomo is able to play anywhere on the infield, so if Lawlar were to get off to a strong start, the Diamondbacks could move Perdomo to a utility role or have him play second base or third base if there were an injury. We will likely see Lawlar get MLB at-bats this season.
