It’s unclear how much longer the Red Sox can keep Meyer on the doorstep of the big leagues with veteran Trevor Story continuing to struggle. The 22-year-old top prospect is hitting .275 with eight homers, 38 RBI and one steal in 35 games this season at the Triple-A level. He offers some multi-position defensive versatility, if Boston wants to get creative with their infield mix, but he projects as the organization’s shortstop of the future. His time is coming.

When the 22-year-old phenom was scratched from the lineup it fueled speculation that he could possibly be joining the Red Sox, but sadly it’s just a minor injury that’s keeping him out of action. Mayer is hitting .270/.324/.520 with seven homers, 34 RBI and one stolen base through his first 25 games at Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox’s second-ranked prospect is now hitting .280/.324/.548 with seven home runs, 34 RBI, 17 runs scored, and one steal in 23 games at Triple-A. He also had a great spring training and seems MLB-ready, but Trevor Story has been great for the Red Sox to start the season, and Kristian Campbell is the AL Rookie of the Year frontrunner right now at second base, so there is no room in the middle infield for Mayer as it stands.

Mayer’s fifth-inning round-tripper came against former big-league lefty Anthony Gose. It traveled 401 feet to right field and left his bat at 103.5 mph. The 22-year-old shortstop tends to get overshadowed by fellow elite prospects Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell, but he’s going to make some noise for fantasy managers once he reaches the big leagues later this year.
