2025 Player Outlook
The 2024 season was one to forget for Davis, as he hit just .144 with a 36.9 percent strikeout rate across 37 games. Joey Bart came into the mix and became the primary backstop for the Pirates, and Davis seems destined to begin the year in the minors. To Davis’ credit, he did a good job staying in the strike zone last season, but a 76.3 percent zone contact rate, 67.3 percent contact rate, and 15.1% swinging strike rate simply isn’t going to cut it. The power may be above average when he makes contact, but the quantity of contact has been too few and far between to make Davis a viable fantasy option. Fortunately, he still has eligibility behind the dish, but with Bart and Endy Rodriguez in the mix, this may be his last year having the “C” for fantasy managers. He’s a late round flyer at best, but more likely, a waiver wire option if he starts getting ABs and catches fire.

Pirates recalled C/OF Henry Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis.
The interesting wrinkle here is that Bart hasn’t been placed on the injured list after leaving Friday’s contest with lower back discomfort. Davis gets the call to fortify Pittsburgh’s catching situation ahead of Saturday’s contest against the Reds after hitting .286 with two steals in eight games this season at the Triple-A level. The former top-overall pick from the 2021 MLB Draft will continue to get chances at the highest level, but he hasn’t blossomed into an everyday regular yet.
The Pirates are calling up Henry Davis after Joey Bart left Friday’s game with back discomfort, MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf reports.
Whether or not Bart is going on the IL is unclear. Perhaps it’ll be Oneil Cruz instead. Davis, the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, is hitting .286/.355/.393 in eight games for Triple-A Indianapolis. He’d split time with Endy Rodríguez behind the plate while Bart is sidelined.
Pirates optioned C Henry Davis to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Davis will begin the season in Triple-A, which isn’t a huge surprise. The 25-year-old instead will head to Indianapolis and get regular playing time rather than backing up Joey Bart. That being said, Davis doesn’t look like he’s ever going to live up to the hype that made him the first-overall pick back in 2021.
Henry Davis hit a grand slam in the ninth inning Saturday to punctuate the Pirates’ 15-5 rout of the Orioles.
Davis is 7-for-26 with two homers as he tries to beat out Endy Rodríguez and Jason Delay for a job behind Joey Bart. Both Davis and Rodríguez have spent all their time either catching or DHing this spring, which would seem to indicate that there’s no chance of the Pirates carrying one with the intention of giving him time at another position. It still probably makes the most sense to go with Delay and let Davis and Rodríguez play regularly in Triple-A initially.
