Marlins placed RHP Eury Pérez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to September 21, with left SI joint inflammation.
That will unfortunately end the 20-year-old hurler’s 2023 campaign. Pérez was awfully impressive in 19 starts for the Marlins — posting a 3.15 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 108/31 K/BB ratio across 91 1/3 innings. Pérez should have plenty of time to fully recover before the start of spring training.
Eury Peréz lasted just three innings while giving up three runs (two earned) in Wednesday’s loss to the Mets.
Peréz needed 69 pitches to get through his three innings, which is not so nice. He walked three and gave up three hits, including a solo homer to Mark Vientos in the second inning. He struck out just two of the 15 batters he faced on the night. The 20-year-old has thrown 128 innings between the majors and minors this season after never having thrown more than 78 innings in a season before, so it’s very possible he’s simply hitting a wall at this stage.
Eury Pérez will start for the Marlins on Wednesday in their series finale against the Mets.
The 20-year-old right-hander would have likely been shut down had the Marlins been eliminated from postseason consideration, but as they’re still fighting for their lives Pérez will take the hill at least once more this season. Through his first 18 starts he has compiled a 3.06 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a 106/28 K/BB ratio across 88 1/3 innings of work.
Eury Pérez remained winless since returning to the majors after giving up three runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Brewers on Thursday.
Pérez struck out seven and walked none, but timely hitting did him in. He’s 0-2 with a 4.33 ERA in seven starts since rejoining the Marlins last month. We imagine he’ll make his next start against the Mets, but if the Marlins fall out of the postseason picture, it’s likely that he’ll be shut down for the final week.
