José Herrera left Friday’s game in the fifth inning after being hit on the top of his helmet with Kyle Tucker’s backswing.
Tucker’s bat came right down on the crown of Herrera’s helmet, seemingly leaving him dazed. Adrian del Castillo took over as Arizona’s catcher. Andrew Knizner would likely get a callup if Herrera lands on the concussion IL.
Diamondbacks recalled C Jose Herrera from Triple-A Reno.
Herrera will split the catching duties with veteran Tucker Barnhart with Gabriel Moreno (thumb) landing on the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Phillies. The 27-year-old backstop has gotten into 88 games in the majors over the last three years, but has spent all of this season back at Triple-A Reno.
Diamondbacks optioned C Jose Herrera to Triple-A Reno.
Arizona had three catchers on their Cactus League roster, and Jose Herrera drew to short straw and will start the season in the minors. Gabriel Moreno figures to be the primary backstop, with veteran Tucker Barnhart playing the role of backup for last season’s NL representative in the World Series.
Jose Herrera finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a walk against the Giants on Saturday.
One last chance for Herrera to impress before the Diamondbacks default to Tucker Barnhart as their backup catcher. We’re not sure Barnhart has anything to offer other than veteran presence at this point, but it’s made him the favorite to serve as Gabriel Moreno’s backup. Herrera doesn’t project as a great backup, either, but he’s probably still the better player.
