Otañez, 27, will now assuredly begin the season on the 15-day injured list. The right-hander is dealing with a right shoulder impingement,and he should be a relief option once ready to go.

Otañez returns to the big leagues with Luis Medina (elbow) landing on the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Phillies. The 27-year-old righty has made three scoreless relief appearances this season in his first taste of the majors.

The Athletics had to clear a spot on their active roster for the return of Hogan Harris on Friday night and unfortunately Otañez was the odd-man out this time around. The 27-year-old hurler has fired 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball for the Athletics this season despite an elevated 1.80 ERA and a 6/4 K/BB ratio. It shouldn’t take him long to garner another opportunity at the big-league level.
