Remarkably, all four balls in play from Martínez tonight were hit in between 102.2 and 103.4 mph. Martínez was filling in for an injured Lane Thomas in center field tonight, but he might prove to be the better option against right-handers of those two.

Martinez, 23, will take the roster spot of Johnathan Rodriguez after Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A. Martinez can play a few positions, but likely will just be a fill-in while he’s with the Guardians.

Martinez will likely be one of — if not the — first players called up by the Guardians if they need a bench piece, but he’ll head to Columbus to get regular playing time. Rodriguez has a good chance of being an early call-up as well.

Martínez was a late addition to the ALDS after Tyler Freeman hurt his oblique. The 22-year-old had one plate appearance in the series against the Tigers but was carried primarily for defensive versatility off the bench. Instead, the Guardians will carry Pedro Avila as another key reliever in the bullpen.
