2025 Player Outlook
A shoulder strain ended Ryan's 2024 campaign early, and across 135 IP, he went 7-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. A 96th percentile walk rate (4.3%) helped keep his WHIP at an impressive spot, and don't overlook his exceptional 2.87 xERA. He added a sinker into the mix last year, but that pitch needs some work, as it was smacked all around the yard, but Ryan's sweeper is very, very good (.207 BAA, 33.7% whiff rate). He's increased his ground ball rate in each of the last three seasons, and he's poised for a big 2025. Health willing, Ryan will get to 160+ IP this season, while providing above average numbers across the board. He's being drafted as an SP3, but he'll perform like a back-end SP2.
Player News
Joe Ryan allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings in a loss to the Braves on Sunday.
Ryan struck out five and walked only one, but he allowed plenty of hard contact with three homers allowed and an average exit velocity of 96.5 mph. As has been the case for most of this season, Ryan is still searching for a secondary to help out his four-seam fastball. He had just two whiffs on 15 swings combined on his sweeper and splitter, and the splitter itself was particularly ineffective with just a 9 percent CSW. The 28-year-old has a 4.00 ERA on the season, and it’s fair to be a little bit concerned about his overall upside; however, we wouldn’t be too concerned about his next start against the Angels.
Joe Ryan delivered five innings of one-run ball and struck out eight against the Mets on Monday.
Ryan had the same line as Clay Holmes — they even both had eight strikeouts and two walks — but he was left with a no-decision and Holmes got the win after the Mets took a lead in the top of the sixth. Ryan’s sweeper was ridiculously effective tonight, accounting for seven whiffs, 13 strikes and one ball the 14 times he threw it. He might need to mix that in more frequently against the Braves on Sunday.
Joe Ryan threw seven shutout innings with just two hits allowed in a win over the Royals on Wednesday.
Ryan struck out four and walked none on the day while registering a 21 percent whiff rate and 29 percent CSW. Ryan saw his velocity tick up slightly on all of his pitches, which is nice to see from a health standpoint, but he continues to struggle to find a reliable secondary pitch to complement his four-seam fastball. Today his splitter had just two whiffs on 14 swings while posting a 14 percent whiff rate and 24 percent CSW. His slider was almost two mph harder today and had a 50 percent CSW on 10 pitches, but it also got hit hard. It’s a situation to continue monitoring, but you’re certainly not mad at the results today. He’ll face the Mets next time out.
Joe Ryan suffered his first defeat of the season on Thursday afternoon, surrendering four runs on five hits over five innings of work against the Astros.
The 28-year-old right-hander struck out six opposing hitters on the afternoon and did not allow a base on balls. The Astros got him for a pair of solo home runs in the second inning from Christian Walker and Jeremy Pena, then Ryan allowed a two-run single to Brendan Rodgers in the fourth inning that barely squeezed through a drawn in infield. Ryan got 10 whiffs on 83 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 31 percent. He’ll carry a 4.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and an 11/0 K/BB ratio into Wednesday’s matchup against the Royals in Kansas City.
