2025 Player Outlook
In 72 games last year for St. Louis, Herrera hit five home runs, stole five bases, and hit .301 (.370 BABIP, .294 xBA). The quality of contact metrics are solid, and he did a good job of staying in the zone last year and getting the bat on the ball (25.9 O-Swing%, 78.6 Contact%). The team has said that Willson Contreras will be a full-time 1B/DH in 2025, paving the way for Herrera to be the team’s primary catcher this season. He won’t hit .300+ again, but he’ll provide a plus batting average for your backstop, and going 10/10 isn’t out of the picture. He’s an ideal target as your second catcher in two-catcher leagues, or in deeper setups, I’m comfortable waiting at the position and making Herrera my guy, as he’ll do a little bit across the board.
Player News
Iván Herrera hit a three-run homer as a DH in the first game of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
Herrera won the duel of the rehabbing catchers, as Tyler Stephenson went 0-for-5 as Louisville’s DH. Herrera will need to catch at least a couple of times before coming off the IL, hopefully early next week. He’s coming back from a bone bruise in his left knee suffered while running to first base.
Ivan Herrera (knee) is aiming to begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday.
Herrera caught a bullpen session on Saturday and is aiming to begin a minor league rehab assignment by the end of next week. The 24-year-old backstop was originally expected to miss roughly one month after being diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee back in early April. It appears there’s a decent shot he’ll rejoin the Cardinals’ lineup at some point in early May.
Ivan Herrera (knee) hopes to begin a minor league rehab assignment before the end of next week.
When the 24-year-old backstop initially suffered the bone bruise in his left knee, the expectation was that he would miss at least a month’s worth of action. We’re about three weeks out right now, which would seem to put him on track if he is indeed able to return to game action at some point next week. It’s unclear how many games he’ll need to get into before the Cardinals are ready to bring him back though. Those counting on Pedro Páges for everyday at-bats may soon need to look elsewhere.
Iván Herrera has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told reporters Monday that Herrera will miss at least one month after additional testing revealed a more serious issue than merely knee inflammation. He also added that the club isn’t considering moving Willson Contreras back behind the plate. The 24-year-old backstop will be out until at least early May, even in a best-case scenario, but he’s worth stashing in fantasy leagues, even in shallower formats. His absence creates an opportunity for Pedro Páges to play everyday, which makes him a potential pickup in deeper mixed leagues.
