Giants selected the contract of David Villar from Triple-A Sacramento.
Giants sent INF David Villar outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Villar went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with San Francisco as extra organizational depth. The 28-year-old infielder has gotten into 109 games at the big-league level over the last four years.

Villar emerged on the fantasy landscape in 2022 with a brief stretch of solid games for the Giants, but is a career .200/.288/.400 hitter with a 32.4 percent strikeout rate. It’s possible the 28-year-old clears waivers and finds up in the Giants’ minor league system.

Villar has proven to be a capable emergency stopgap option this season for San Francisco, but there isn’t really a role for him at the highest level after the Giants picked up Mark Canha at the trade deadline and also promoted former top prospect Marco Luciano.
