Peguero was once a top prospect for the Pirates, but he’s hit just .237 in 211 MLB at-bats and his shine has worn off a bit. Still, he’s off to a good start in Triple-A, going 13-for-41 (.317) with four RBI and two steals in 11 games. Perhaps he can work his way back to Pittsburgh for another shot.

Peguero was called up from the minors on Tuesday following the controversial release of Rowdy Tellez. He has since started two games at shortstop with Isiah Kiner-Falefa moving to third base and Jared Triolo moving to first. We should expect that to be the lineup for the final few games of the season, which gives Peguero some value in deeper formats and means that Billy Cook seems to have lost his starting spot.

Peguero, who spent about half of his age-22 season with the Pirates in 2023, has been a non-factor at age 23. He was up briefly back in June, but he didn’t get into any games then, and he wound up hitting .257.319/.410 with 139 strikeouts in 555 plate appearances for Indianapolis. He’s hardly hopeless yet, but he doesn’t really project as a future regular at this point. The Pirates will likely give him a couple of starts at shortstop this week.
