2025 Player Outlook

Ignore Olson's 4-8 record last year, because his numbers were more impressive than that. He had a 3.53 ERA (3.64 xERA), 1.18 WHIP, and 86th percentile ground ball rate. Despite a strikeout rate that came in at the 39th percentile, he had an 87th percentile chase rate, 75th percentile whiff rate, and he leaned into his slider usage more as the year went on. His slider and changeup are his biggest putaway pitches, and both pitches registered a 42+ percent whiff rate last season. There's a lot to like about Olson heading into his age-25 season, and he could be primed for a breakout of sorts in 2025. With a strikeout rate that should be in the 23-26 percent range this season alongside a 3.75-ish ERA and 1.20 WHIP, there's a lot to like in selecting Olson as part of your fantasy rotation. Oh, also, AL Central.

The 25-year-old right-hander piled up seven strikeouts on the evening while issuing three free passes. He actually kept the Astros off the board completely through the first five innings but allowed a two-out RBI double to Christian Walker in the sixth inning before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Will Vest then came on and gave up a two-run single, allowing both inherited runners to score and putting Olson on the hook for the loss. He’ll bring a 3.55 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 32/14 K/BB ratio (33 innings) into Sunday’s matchup against the Angels in Los Angeles.

Olson had seven strikeouts, 17 missed swings and an impressive 41% CSW in the 85-pitch outing. He did give up a 407-foot fly to Tirso Ornelas that would have been a homer in 14 ballparks. In Detroit, though, it was just a loud out. Olson will take a 3-1 record and a 3.29 ERA into his next start in Houston.

The 25-year-old hurler punched out five batters on the evening while allowing two free passes. The Royals put their first two men on against him to start the game and also loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning but weren’t able to scratch out a single run against him. Olson generated 10 whiffs on 87 pitches on the night — eight of them on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 32 percent. He’ll try to build off of his strongest start of the season as he carries a 4.50 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and an 18/10 K/BB ratio (20 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Padres.

Olson also issued three walks on the night while striking out three. He threw just 48 of his 90 pitches for strikes in the ballgame, which contributed to his early exit. The Twins scratched out a run against him in the second inning on an RBI single off the bat of Ty France, then broke the game open with three more in the fifth while chasing him. Olson got 10 swings and misses on 90 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he brings a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 13/8 K/BB ratio (15 innings) into Wednesday’s battle against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
