2025 Player Outlook
Ignore Olson's 4-8 record last year, because his numbers were more impressive than that. He had a 3.53 ERA (3.64 xERA), 1.18 WHIP, and 86th percentile ground ball rate. Despite a strikeout rate that came in at the 39th percentile, he had an 87th percentile chase rate, 75th percentile whiff rate, and he leaned into his slider usage more as the year went on. His slider and changeup are his biggest putaway pitches, and both pitches registered a 42+ percent whiff rate last season. There's a lot to like about Olson heading into his age-25 season, and he could be primed for a breakout of sorts in 2025. With a strikeout rate that should be in the 23-26 percent range this season alongside a 3.75-ish ERA and 1.20 WHIP, there's a lot to like in selecting Olson as part of your fantasy rotation. Oh, also, AL Central.
Player News
Reese Olson picked up his second victory of the 2025 season on Thursday, shutting out the Royals on four hits over five innings.
The 25-year-old hurler punched out five batters on the evening while allowing two free passes. The Royals put their first two men on against him to start the game and also loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning but weren’t able to scratch out a single run against him. Olson generated 10 whiffs on 87 pitches on the night — eight of them on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 32 percent. He’ll try to build off of his strongest start of the season as he carries a 4.50 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and an 18/10 K/BB ratio (20 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Padres.
Reese Olson struggled with his command in a no-decision against the Twins on Friday evening, allowing four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Olson also issued three walks on the night while striking out three. He threw just 48 of his 90 pitches for strikes in the ballgame, which contributed to his early exit. The Twins scratched out a run against him in the second inning on an RBI single off the bat of Ty France, then broke the game open with three more in the fifth while chasing him. Olson got 10 swings and misses on 90 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to bounce back as he brings a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 13/8 K/BB ratio (15 innings) into Wednesday’s battle against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Reese Olson allowed two runs over six innings on Saturday in a win over the White Sox.
Olson struck out five and issued three walks. He gave up a run-scoring double to Andrew Vaughn in the opening frame, but settled in nicely afterwards, and was eventually staked to a six-run advantage by the middle innings as Detroit’s offense plated seven runs through three innings. He appeared headed for serious trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases with nobody out, but ended up coaxing a key double-play ball from Luis Robert Jr. to dodge a potential blowup. He’ll square off against the division-rival Twins on Friday in his next outing.
Reese Olson was charged for four runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss Saturday to the Dodgers.
Olson was handed a two-run cushion in the first inning, but immediately gave it up on a two-run shot in the first. He was solid over the next three innings, but a two-run double by Teoscar Hernandez turned a decent outing into a mediocre one. The Dodgers are hard to pitch to. Olson should have more success next week against the White Sox.
