Statcast says Sosa has been one of the game’s unluckiest hitters — he entered the day with xSLG of .572 compared to an actual .360 mark — but this one was just a bad game. It wouldn’t be of much concern, but he’s still battling for at-bats on a team willingly DHing Nick Maton, and he was out of the lineup two of the White Sox’s previous four games. He really ought to be in there nearly every day.

Sosa homered on Opening Day and has three hard-hit balls to one strikeout in two games, but it seems he needs the early day off anyway. Meanwhile, the White Sox have Nick Maton DHing for a second game in a row.

Sosa played first base today. He’s made two starts there, two at second and four at third this spring. The 25-year-old is one of the White Sox’s most interesting bats; his .254/.283/.359 line in 369 plate appearances last season wasn’t anything special, but with a 41% hard-hit rate, he had a .278 xBA and a .419 xSLG. He’ll probably turn into a regular for the team at some point, even if it doesn’t happen initially. While he should hit, his fantasy ceiling is capped by his lack of any steal potential and the paucity of runs scored and RBI generated by the White Sox lineup.

Sosa was hitting .216/.247/.295 in 281 PA coming into the final month, but he wound up at .373/.398/.566 in September to put him at .254/.283/.359 overall. That’s still not great, but it should get him a lot more consideration for a spot in the White Sox infield next year. Sosa is still just 24, and while it’d be nice if he had more plate discipline, there is quite a bit of pop here and some potential for fantasy value down the line.
