Guardians recalled LHP Joey Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus.
Cantillo, demoted Monday, is allowed to be recalled as a result of Paul Sewald’s IL placement. He just threw 55 pitches for the Guardians on Sunday, so it’ll probably be one more day before he’s available out of the pen. He has a 2.35 ERA in 15 1/3 innings this season, though he’s given up five unearned runs to go along with the four earned.
Guardians optioned LHP Joey Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus.
Cantillo had a 2.35 ERA in 15 1/3 innings out of the pen, though that was largely because five of the nine runs he’d allowed were unearned. One imagines the Guardians will stretch him back out now to have him available as a rotation alternative. He threw a season-high 55 pitches on Sunday, so he wasn’t going to be available for a couple of days anyway.
Joey Cantillo fanned nine batters while giving up four runs in 3 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Giants.
Cantillo got a whopping 17 missed swings in the 67-pitch outing, including 13 on the 28 changeups he threw. Alas, when he did give up contact, it was pretty hard and six of the balls in play against him turned into hits. Cantillo is competing with Luis L. Ortiz for the last spot in the Cleveland rotation. Today’s outing was interesting, but it’s hard to say whether it truly helped his case. He has a 7.45 ERA this spring.
Joey Cantillo bounced back from a poor showing against the Cubs to keep the Athletics scoreless for three innings Friday.
Cantillo allowed three hits, walked two and struck out one. The 25-year-old, who had a 5.11 ERA in eight major league starts last season, is likely behind Luis L. Ortiz in line for the fifth spot in Cleveland’s rotation.
