Phillies optioned C Rafael Marchán to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
There’s no room for Marte on Philadelphia’s active roster with starting backstop J.T. Realmuto coming off the injured list for Saturday’s game against the Pirates. He’s been a capable backup catcher, when needed, over the last few years.
Phillies recalled C Rafael Marchan from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Marchan is up to take the roster spot of J.T. Realmuto, with Realmuto going on the injured list with right knee pain. Marchan will likely be the backup backstop to Drew Stubbs while he’s on the roster, which could be a while with Realmuto undergoing surgery.
Rafael Marchán will serve as the Phillies’ extra player for this weekend’s London Series against the Mets.
Marchán was activated from the injured list back in late May and has remained stationed at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 25-year-old backstop joins the Phillies overseas as their extra position player for the two-game London Series.
Phillies placed C Rafael Marchán on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with lower back pain.
Marchán wasn’t going to make the Opening Day roster anyway, as Garrett Stubbs will once again begin the season as J.T. Realmuto’s backup, but now he’ll get a late start on the season.
