Pete Fairbanks tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win against the Brewers on Saturday.
Fairbanks took the mound in the top of the ninth with the game tied against the Brewers. He worked around a walk, striking out one batter to keep the game tied going into the bottom of the inning. The Rays would walk it off, putting Fairbanks in line for his third win. Thje 31-year-old right-hander has posted a 1.65 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and a 15/8 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings to go with eight saves.

The Rays carried a 5-1 lead into the eighth inning on Thursday, but that advantage was cut to one when Bryson Stott blasted a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning. Fairbanks then came on for the ninth and allowed a leadoff single to Kyle Schwarber. He then tried to pick off pinch-runner Johan Rojas, but threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Rojas to get to third. He eventually scored on a ground ball off the bat of Max Kepler. Fairbanks has been terrific overall on the season, registering a 1.76 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 14/7 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings. His job isn’t in any danger at all.

Fairbanks was summoned to protect a one-run lead in the final frame and managed to coax harmless ground outs from Ben Rice, Paul Goldschmidt and Austin Wells to preserve the victory. The 31-year-old righty needed just 11 pitches (six strikes) in this one. He’s converted all seven of his save opportunities this season to re-establish himself as one of the better closing options in the fantasy landscape.
