Yankees optioned INF Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; reassigned RHP Wilking Rodríguez to minor league camp.
Shewmake is an excellent defender, but simply hasn’t hit at the highest level over the past few years. At 27 years old, he projects as an up-and-down bench option moving forward. He figures to get a chance in New York at some point after being claimed off waivers last month from the Royals.

Shewmake was designated for assignment Friday, and spent just a month in the Kansas City organization. He now joins the Yankees, and assuming he sticks around, he provides some depth in the infield; likely at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 27-year-old infielder had just been claimed off of waivers from the White Sox in early January, but he gets the boot from the club’s 40-man roster to make room for Carlos Estévez on Friday. There’s a decent chance that Shewmake could slide through waivers this time and continue to function as extra depth for the Royals.

Shewmake was designated for assignment by the White Sox after they traded for Tyler Gilbert. The 27-year-old was a first-round pick in 2019, and he’ll get a chance to compete for a utility role with Kansas City. Odds are that he’ll be depth in Omaha to open the 2025 season, assuming he isn’t designated for assignment before the year begins.
