Yankees signed OF Cooper Hummel to a minor league contract.
The 30-year-old outfielder was designated for assignment by the Astros earlier in the week and refused his outright assignment to Triple-A Sugar Land. He’ll add quality outfield depth at the Triple-A level for the Bombers.
Cooper Hummel has elected free agency.
The 30-year-old refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Sugar Land and instead will instead peddle his wares on the open market. He did a nice job during Cactus League play — slashing .316/.435/.447 with a pair of swipes in 46 plate appearances — so he shouldn’t have trouble finding another team willing to take a chance on him.
Astros designated OF Cooper Hummel for assignment.
The 30-year-old hit .316/.435/.447 with two steals in 46 plate appearances this spring but could not win a spot on the Opening Day roster. If he doesn’t make another team, he could re-join the Astros minor league system.
Cooper Hummel went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI as the Astros topped the Nationals 8-6 on Sunday.
Not much consideration was given to Hummel going into the spring, even though the Astros kept him on their 40-man all winter, but it looks like he will get the bench spot that Jon Singleton had been penciled in for. The switch-hitting Hummel is batting .315/.435/.447 this spring. He hasn’t done any catching since arriving in the Astros organization last year, so he’s strictly an outfielder and a first baseman now.
