Watkins will head to Taiwan as a 32-year-old who has bounced around four MLB organizations. He spent 2023 in the Nationals system and registered a 4.56 ERA over 118 1/3 innings with Triple-A Rochester.

There were reports earlier this week that Watkins was heading overseas to either Korea or Japan, but he’s apparently opted to stick around stateside and compete next spring for a spot on Washington’s season-opening roster. The 31-year-old righty made one start this past season for the Athletics after making a career-high 23 appearances (20 starts) the previous year for the Orioles.

He’s just weighing which one at this point. The 31-year-old Watkins was a useful stopgap for the Orioles in 2022, posting a 4.70 ERA in 20 stars and three relief appearances, but he struggled mightily while bouncing around in Triple-A last season.

Watkins has been jettisoned from Oakland’s 40-man roster after making just one spot start for the club after being claimed off waivers from the Astros earlier this month.
