Mastrobuoni was designated for assignment after the Cubs acquired Matt Festa from the Rangers. The 29-year-old has not been successful with the bat, but has a chance to make the Seattle roster because of his ability to play all over the field

The Cubs needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster after acquiring Matt Festa from the Rangers on Thursday and unfortunately for Mastrobuoni, he drew the short straw this time around. The 29-year-old utilityman slashed an anemic .194/.245/.224 with no homers, four RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 106 plate appearances with the Cubs during the 2024 season. There’s a decent chance that he passes through waivers unclaimed and continues to function as depth for the Cubs.

Mastrobuoni is sent down with the Cubs wanting to take a look at Kevin Alcántara for the final handful of games. The 28-year-old will likely compete for a roster spot in 2025, but in a role that offers no fantasy upside.

It’s not a huge surprise that Mastrobuoni is up to help the Cubs as they try and secure one of the final playoff spots. His versatility makes him a valuable bench option, but his lack of offensive firepower makes him a poor fantasy one.
