Roederer was a second-round pick of the Cubs back in 2018 and never wound up making it to the majors. The 25-year-old outfielder batted .186/.306/.311 with six homers and seven steals in 369 plate appearances last year between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.

As a position player -- not a pitcher -- Roederer should only require several months of rest and rehab, not the more typical 12-15 months. In fact, he is expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2022 minor league season. The 21-year-old former second-round pick had slashed .229/.345/.300 with zero homers and four steals in 20 games this summer at High-A South Bend.
