Cardinals optioned OF Michael Siani to Triple-A Memphis.
Thomas Saggese will keep his spot even though Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman are healthy. It’s good news for Victor Scott II, though playing time hasn’t been much of an issue for him thus far. It also probably helps Jordan Walker a little, given that he’s been replaced on defense six times this season (though only once in the last two weeks). Siani, who spent much of last season as the Cardinals’ primary center fielder, was hitting .250/.294/.250 in 17 plate appearances after losing out to Scott this spring.
Michael Siani was scratched from Monday’s game due to illness.
Siani was slated to start in the outfield but the Cardinals will give the 25-year-old a day off — at the least — to recover. Victor Scott II is starting in Siani’s place.
Michael Siani went 0-for-4 against the Nationals on Saturday, leaving him 1-for-21 to start the spring.
Siani was a Gold Glove quality center fielder for the Cardinals last season, but it came with just a .228/.285/.285 line in 334 at-bats, and Statcast actually thought he was fortunate to hit that well (it gave him a .205 xBA). He should slip into more of a reserve role this year, whether it’s because he’s overtaken by Victor Scott II or, as seems more likely, the Cardinals prove willing to play Lars Nootbaar in center.
Cardinals activated OF Michael Siani off the 10-day injured list
While Siani is activated, he won’t be active Sunday. The outfielder will join the team Monday for their series against the Brewers. Siani has missed close to a month with his right oblique strain.
