Marte had a 116.7-mph homer off Edward Cabrera, which was a little more impressive than his first blast off Jorge Mateo. Those with an open spot could do worse than taking a flier on Marte. He’s far from a sure thing at this point — he might even be back in Triple-A in a couple of weeks — but there’s plenty of power and speed upside here.

Yes, the home run was a grand slam off position player Jorge Mateo, so we need to consider that, but it was still an incredible box score from Marte. The 23-year-old had also been red-hot at Triple-A, slashing .353/.425/.529 in nine games before being called up and barely played by the Reds earlier in the week. With Christian Encarnacion-Strand on the IL, Jeimer Candelario struggling, and Gavin Lux not showing anything different than he did in his time with the Dodgers, Marte should get a longer leash to be the starting third baseman in Cincinnati. We have no idea if the Reds will let it happen, but he can be added in fantasy leagues just in case they do.

Marte was just optioned back to Triple-A on Tuesday when Matt McLain was activated off the IL, but he’ll return now with Christian Encarnacion-Strand landing on the IL. However, we saw last week that Marte being up in Cincinnati does not mean they’ll play him. Austin Hays being off the IL means that Gavin Lux will need to play third base more often, which makes it hard to envision regular playing time for Marte.
