Rangers optioned INF Jonathan Ornelas to Triple-A Round Rock.
Ornelas is back to Round Rock with Corey Seager (hamstring) off the injured list. Ornelas will essentially be the safety valve for when the Rangers need an extra infielder in 2025 as long as he sticks in the org.

The 24-year-old infielder spent a few days with the Rangers back in early April where he went hitless in four at-bats. He’ll take the place of Nick Ahmed on the Rangers’ roster after the veteran infielder was designated for assignment on Friday.

The Rangers may need Ezequiel Duran to be in the lineup with Wyatt Langford (oblique) out, so Texas is moving Ornelas down and recalling Duran in a corresponding transaction. Ornelas will be back in a utility role at some point.

Ornelas was recalled because Josh Jung is injured and Josh Smith hurt himself during Saturday’s game. Texas needed an extra infielder and Ornelas will do the job with Jung going on the injured list. Ornelas is in the lineup Sunday playing shortstop and batting eighth with Corey Seager getting a routine day off.
