Rays manager Kevin Cash said earlier this week that Shane McClanahan (triceps) is still dealing with discomfort.
Cash added that McClanahan has been given clearance to continue his throwing program, despite the lingering discomfort, but won’t be able to start ramping up from an intensity standpoint until the issue is resolved. There is no timetable for the 28-year-old fantasy ace to make his season debut. It’s starting to look like he won’t make it back until the second half, even in a best-case scenario.
Shane McClanahan (triceps) began a throwing program on Tuesday.
As of now, McClanahan is throwing without a baseball, but all the imaging done on his arm has shown no structural issues at all. McClanahan had nerve inflammation and the end of March, so the Rays have waited until the inflammation fully subsided before getting him throwing again. There should be a relatively long ramp-up process for McClanahan, but a June return still seems likely if his arm continues to feel good as he goes through his throwing program.
Rays transferred LHP Shane McClanahan to the 60-day injured list.
It’s merely a procedural move to free up a spot on Tampa Bay’s 40-man roster while McClanahan recovers from left triceps inflammation. The 27-year-old southpaw was slated to resume throwing this week, but it’s unclear whether that happened. There haven’t been a ton of updates on his progress since the start of the regular season. It’s looking like sometime in June might be the best-case scenario for his return at this point.
Shane McClanahan (triceps) is expected to resume throwing this week.
McClanahan has been brought along slowly since landing on the injured list back in late March with left triceps inflammation. Additional imaging didn’t reveal any structural damage, but he hasn’t resumed throwing yet. He’ll build up his pitch count and stamina from the ground floor, so fantasy managers shouldn’t expect him back until at least some point in June, even in a best-case scenario.
