Nick Nelson has signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan.
Nelson, 29, spent the last three years with the Phillies, though after posting a 4.85 ERA and leading the NL in wild pitches with 13 in 68 2/3 innings in 2022, he was mostly a minor leaguer the last two seasons. He originally came up with the Yankees in 2020, and he had a 5.20 ERA in 114 1/3 innings over five MLB seasons.

Nelson falls victim to a roster crunch as the Phillies needed to bring up some emergency catching depth with J.T. Realmuto banged up. The 28-year-old righty has made only four relief appearances this season in the big leagues.

Nelson is back with the Phillies for the first time since the first half of April. He’s been toying with a knuckleball while working in relief for the IronPigs. He had a 6.30 ERA in 50 innings overall in Triple-A, but he’d come in at 2.55 in 17 2/3 innings since the beginning of August.
