Sam Huff hit a two-run homer and walked Saturday against the Rangers.
Huff had only ever known playing in games for the Rangers until today, when he homered in his first game since being claimed off waivers in January. He’s in the running to open up as the Giants’ backup to Patrick Bailey, and if he misses out on that opportunity, another team could consider picking him up at the end of the spring, since he’s out of options.
Giants claimed C Sam Huff off waivers from the Rangers.
Huff was once a top prospect who has shown some offensive upside at the highest level, but injuries and contact issues have seen his stock drop drastically. He’ll compete for a backup backstop position with the Giants, but more than likely is just organizational depth. Austin Warren was waived in a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster.
Rangers designated C/DH Sam Huff for assignment.
The Rangers needed an extra spot on the 40-man roster after signing reliever Shawn Armstrong, so Huff was the odd man out. The one-time Top 100 prospect has never quite figured it out at the big league level and his deficiencies behind the plate make him more of a DH-only. He had just four at-bats for the Rangers in 2024 and hit .246 with 13 home runs in 111 games at Triple-A. Some team will give the 26-year-old another chance at a minor league deal or he’ll choose to take a gamble and remain in the Rangers’ organization.
Rangers optioned C Sam Huff to Triple-A Round Rock.
Huff is back down with Jonah Heim off the paternity list. The 26-year-old backstop will return to Round Rock and hope for another opportunity, but it’s tough to see it with the Rangers at this point.
