The starting catcher job appears to be open for Campusano with Kyle Higashioka departing in free agency. Elias Diaz represents Campusano's competition for the job, as he was brought back after joining the Padres late in the season last year. Campusano failed to win the job last season as the former top prospect slashed just .227/.281/.361 in 299 plate appearances.

Luis Campusano delivered his fourth and fifth homers for Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Campusano’s .407/.508/.796 line has him more than 200 points of OPS in front of any other qualified PCL hitter. Of course, it’s the glove, not the bat, that got him sent down in favor of Martín Maldonado at the end of the spring, and the Padres certainly are not looking to shake things up at the moment. Campusano will be ready when needed, though.
Luis Campusano went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and three runs scored for Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
The 26-year-old has started the seasong 17-for-43 (.395) with three home runs, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored. He also has a solid 9:7 K:BB ratio in 12 games. Meanwhile, Elias Diaz has gone 7-for-30 at the big league level for the Padres. A change may not be imminent, but Diaz will need to start hitting if he’s going to hold off Campusano for much longer.
Luis Campusano went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday’s game for Triple-A El Paso
In his first three games at Triple-A, Campusano has gone 4-for-11 (.364) with one home run, five runs scored, one RBI, two walks, and two strikeouts. The 26-year-old lost the starting catcher job to Elias Diaz in spring training, but can keep the pressure on the veteran by continuing to hit well in Triple-A.
Padres optioned C Luis Campusano to Triple-A El Paso.
It’ll be veteran Elias Díaz and Martín Maldonado handling the catching duties for the Padres at the outset of the regular season. Campusano possesses a much higher offensive ceiling, but hasn’t quite put it all together for extended stretches at the highest level. He’ll play everyday back at Triple-A El Paso and should return to the majors at some point later this year.
