Even though the Pirates are facing a left-hander, Alexander Canario is on the bench for a fourth straight game Tuesday against the Cubs.
We’re not really sure whether Canario is any good or not, but what we do know is that his 26 at-bats this season have produced six barrels and four additional hard-hit balls. They’ve amounted to only two hits, but Statcast gives him a .247 xBA and a .726 xSLG. If the Pirates, who have started him twice in 14 games, don’t see any potential there, they might as well put him on waivers and give someone else a chance to take a look.
Alexander Canario belted a solo homer and walked twice on Saturday in a loss to the Reds.
Pirates acquired OF Alexander Canario from the Mets for cash considerations.
Canario represents an intriguing addition for the Pirates since he’ll have a much clearer path to at-bats than he had previously with the Mets. The 24-year-old former top prospect was jettisoned from New York’s 40-man roster last week and should get a chance to contribute in Pittsburgh. We’d recommend a wait-and-see approach for fantasy purposes, but he’s a name to watch in deeper mixed leagues to see if it ever comes together.
Mets designated OF Alexander Canario and OF José Azocar.
It’s a little surprising no outfielder-needy team sent some cash the Mets’ way in return for Canario. The Rockies’ signing of Mickey Moniak might take them out of the picture here, but he’d still make plenty of sense for the Marlins. Canario’s big finish gave him a .306/.419/.611 line this spring, and he’s still just 24 years old.
