Toro provides Boston with an experienced stopgap solution at first base in the wake of Triston Casas suffering a serious left knee injury during Friday’s game against the Twins. The 28-year-old journeyman has hit .323 with two homers in 27 games this season at the Triple-A level. He holds a lifetime .220/.285/.353 triple-slash line in 365 games in the big leagues since 2019.

Toro has bounced around through his MLB career after being a relatively highly-touted prospect as a member of the Astros. He posted a .643 OPS with the A’s before being designated for assignment, and will provide roster depth with an outside chance of making Boston out of spring training.

The Athletics designated Toro for assignment earlier this week, but with nobody claiming him, he’ll go to Triple-A and wait for another opportunity at the big league level.
