Vidal Bruján, who came off the IL on Tuesday, is playing third base Friday in his first start for the Cubs.
That’s three third basemen in three games since Matt Shaw was sent down; Gage Workman got the call Tuesday, and Jon Berti played the position on Wednesday. The Cubs will likely go with the hot hand if one ever materializes.
Cubs activated INF/OF Vidal Bruján from the 10-day injured list.
Bruján’s speed and defensive versatility make him a strong complementary role player at this stage of his career. The 27-year-old missed the first couple weeks of the regular season recovering from a right elbow sprain.
Vidal Bruján, on the shelf with an elbow sprain, went 1-for-4 in the first game of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.
He played center field in the game. Bruján is out of options, so once his rehab stint is over, the Cubs will have to decide whether to put him on the major league roster or DFA him. Carrying him would presumably mean giving up on Rule 5 pick Gage Workman, releasing jon Berti or sending down Matt Shaw.
Vidal Bruján is struggling to overcome the right elbow sprain that got him put on the injured list after the Cubs returned from Japan.
Bruján came off the bench in one game in Tokyo before landing on the injured list. He’s still having trouble throwing and is probably weeks away from returning.
