Padres signed LHP Ryan Carpenter to a minor league contract.

Carpenter hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2019 campaign when he made a career-high nine starts for the Tigers, finishing with a stratospheric 9.30 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 25/13 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings of work. The 33-year-old southpaw has spent the last three seasons pitching overseas in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League and the Korea Baseball Organization. He represents extra organizational starting pitching depth for San Diego heading into spring training.

Ryan Carpenter has re-signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Carpenter returns for another stint in Korea after posting a 3.97 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 179/72 K/BB ratio across 170 innings last season. He'll take home $350,000 and can earn an additional $200,000 through incentives. The deal also includes a $200,000 signing bonus.

The 30-year-old southpaw also pitched overseas in 2020, toeing the slab for the Rakuten Monkeys of the Chinese Baseball League. There, he registered a 4.00 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 150/33 K/BB ratio across 157 1/3 innings in 26 appearances (25 starts). He'll earn a base salary of $300,000 along with a signing bonus of $100,000. Carpenter also has the opportunity to earn an additional $100,000 in incentives.

Carpenter struggled to an awful 9.30 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP in 40.2 innings for the Tigers in 2019. He missed most of the final two months of the season with an elbow impingement.
