Alex Call is on the bench for a fourth straight game Tuesday against the Orioles.
Call was on the bench for the first four games of the year, started 13 of the following 15 and now has been back on the bench as Jacob Young has returned to favor. Call has a nice .293/.407/.390 line in 55 plate appearances, but Young is also getting on base at a nice clip now; he’s hit .233/.377/.256. The Nationals haven’t shown much interest in playing both by using either Call or James Wood at DH.
Alex Call is starting over Jacob Young for a second straight day Sunday.
Call didn’t get an at-bat in the Nationals’ first four games, but he started three of the last four and went 4-for-8 with two RBI and two walks. Dylan Crews is good enough in center that it seems the Nationals have decided they can go with the hot hand here and take Young out of the lineup, with Call starting in right.
Nationals placed OF Alex Call on the 10-day injured list with a partial tear of the plantar fascia in his left foot.
Call was hitting .343 with three homers, 14 RBI and five stolen bases in 30 games prior to suffering the non-contact injury during Friday night’s game against Atlanta. He’s probably done for the year, which is unfortunate since he appeared to be taking full advantage of his opportunity with the Nationals.
Alex Call told reporters after Friday’s game that he’s cautiously optimistic after injuring his foot during Friday’s battle against the Braves.
Call suffered the injury as he fell while he was charging a shallow fly ball in the outfield. The 29-year-old outfielder told reporters that he has been dealing with plantar fasciitis and felt something pop on Friday — which he believes may actually be a good thing and help to relieve the issue. It would still be surprising if he didn’t end up on the injured list, but perhaps the situation is not as dire as it initially appeared.
