Akil Baddoo, who had surgery for a fractured hamate bone in late February, is beginning a rehab assignment with low-A Lakeland on Wednesday.
Baddoo, who was removed from Detroit’s 40-man roster in December, is currently on the Triple-A injured list. He could eventually return to the majors if the Tigers keep dealing with injuries, but it figures to be a while; he’s essentially starting spring training now.
Tigers reassigned OF Akil Baddoo, INF/OF Bligh Madris, RHP Jordan Balazovic, RHP Brendan White, LHP Dietrich Enns, LHP Matt Gage, INF Andrew Navigato and C Brian Serven to minor league camp.
Baddoo likely would’ve made Detroit’s season-opening roster as their starting right fielder, in the wake of Parker Meadow’s nerve-related arm injury, had he not undergone surgery last month to repair a hamate fracture in his right hand. No other real surprises here among the latest round of cuts from Tigers camp, but several of the pitchers have a shot to make it to the Motor City in middle relief roles..
Akil Baddoo underwent surgery Thursday to address a hamate hook fracture in his right hand.
Baddoo will be out of action for the next few weeks at least, with a more concrete timeline likely available in the coming days. The 26-year-old was sent outright to Triple-A this offseason, and was unlikely to make the Opening Day roster even before this injury.
Tigers sent OF Akil Baddoo outright to Triple-A Toledo.
Baddoo went unclaimed on waivers and will remain with Detroit since it’s the first time he’s been designated for assignment in his career. The 26-year-old outfielder felt like a logical change of scenery candidate, but there wasn’t another organization out there willing to roll the dice. He’s facing an uphill climb to get back to the majors next season.
