Athletics signed first-round pick SS Jacob Wilson.
Wilson receives a $5.5 million signing bonus, which is roughly $1.1 million less than slot-value for the sixth overall pick. The son of former All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson batted .412 and struck out only five times in 49 games this spring for Grand Canyon in his final collegiate campaign.
Athletics selected Grand Canyon SS Jacob Wilson with the sixth pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.
This qualifies as a bit of a surprise, but the rebuilding Athletics will roll the dice on the son of longtime Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson. Jacob has taken after his father in becoming a fine defensive shortstop, and he just posted a stellar .412/.461/.635 triple-slash line, while striking out only five times all season for Grand Canyon. The 21-year-old middle infielder never figures to hit for much power, and also doesn’t offer a lot of speed, so he’s not especially interesting as a fantasy prospect. However, the top-notch contact ability, combined with his defense, could make him a quality regular at the big-league level.
Astros sent INF Jacob Wilson outright to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. Wilson is 3-for-20 at the plate this season for the A's and Astros.
Astros optioned INF Jacob Wilson to Triple-A Sugar Land.
This move clears out a 26-man roster spot for Alex Bregman, who is back from the IL on Wednesday. Wilson has slashed just .150/.190/.300 in 21 plate appearances this year between Oakland and Houston.
