Cubs signed INF Nicky Lopez to a one-year contract.
Lopez elected free agency after being designated for assignment and rejecting an outright assignment to Triple-A by the Angels. Lopez will be a helper with his glove at multiple positions, but he doesn’t have nearly enough offensive upside to suggest as a fantasy option.
Nicky Lopez has elected free agency.
Lopez went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week once Zach Neto returned from the injured list. The 30-year-old defensive specialist should be able to latch on somewhere as emergency infield depth.
Angels designated INF Nicky Lopez for assignment.
The Angels needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the return of Zach Neto on Friday and Lopez was unfortunately the odd man out this time around. There’s a chance that the veteran infielder could generate some interest on waivers from a team in need of quality infield depth.
Nicky Lopez is starting at shortstop and batting ninth for the Angels on Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Kevin Newman, who sat on Tuesday against a lefty, will sit again on Wednesday, which could be an indication that the Angels are re-evaluating how they are approaching the shortstop position. Presumed starter Zach Neto (shoulder) began his rehab assignment on Tuesday, so the Angels may only need to piece things together for another couple of weeks, but Lopez will draw his first start on Wednesday.
