Thorpe was a top-100 prospect several years ago but owns a rough 5.76 ERA in 59 1/3 career major league innings. And he had surrendered eight earned runs through just 1 2/3 frames this season at Triple-A St. Paul.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Archer. Thorpe, 26, holds a career 5.76 ERA over 24 appearances -- seven starts -- at the major league level.

Thorpe landed on the injured list with left shoulder soreness about a month ago and can now officially be ruled out for the season. The 25-year-old posted a 4.70 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance for Minnesota this season.
