Thorpe was a top-100 prospect several years ago but owns a rough 5.76 ERA in 59 1/3 career major league innings. And he had surrendered eight earned runs through just 1 2/3 frames this season at Triple-A St. Paul.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Archer. Thorpe, 26, holds a career 5.76 ERA over 24 appearances -- seven starts -- at the major league level.

Thorpe landed on the injured list with left shoulder soreness about a month ago and can now officially be ruled out for the season. The 25-year-old posted a 4.70 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance for Minnesota this season. 

Thorpe was removed from Wednesday's game against Cleveland with the sore shoulder. He'll miss at least ten days, but there's no timetable yet as to when the 25-year-old southpaw will be back on the bump.
