It’s not often that we blurb about Wade based on in-game performance, but we couldn’t let this one pass by; Wade reached base safely four times for the first in 451 games since making his major league debut in 2017. With both Jackson Merrill and Brandon Lockridge on the IL, Wade was making his second start in center field today. He’ll continue to see time there against righties until Merrill returns.

The versatile 30-year-old will add some depth to the Padres’ bench with Jake Cronenworth (rib) landing on the injured list on Friday. Wade was hitting .321/.406/.321 with one RBI and a pair of stolen bases through his first six games at Triple-A El Paso.

Wade has opted to remain with the Padres as extra depth in the minors rather than elect free agency. The 30-year-old failed to make San Diego’s season-opening roster, but could wind up getting the call on an emergency basis if the need arises.

Wade opened the scoring in the fourth inning as he plated Elias Diaz with a bunt single. He then flashed his power in the sixth with a two-run blast off of Trevor Richards that made it a 3-0 ballgame. With his two-hit attack, the versatile 30-year-old is now hitting .205 (8-for-39) with a homer, six RBI and one stolen base on the spring.
