Tigers selected the contract of C Tomás Nido from Triple-A Toledo.
Nido will make his Tigers debut after going 4-for-25 with a homer in six games for Toledo. The defensive-minded veteran figures to serve as Dillon Dingler’s backup until Jake Rogers returns.
Tomás Nido hit a pair of two-run homers Wednesday in the rout of the Phillies.
Nido is 6-for-16 this spring as he tries to overtake Dillon Dingler and make the Tigers as a non-roster player. It doesn’t sound like that is the plan for Detroit, but Nido’s plus defense will make him of interest around the league if catchers start getting hurt.
Tigers re-signed C Tomás Nido to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Nido finished last year in Detroit after being released by the Cubs in late August. The 30-year-old defensive specialist posted a subterranean .192/.219/.315 triple-slash line with four homers in 140 plate appearances over 49 games last year between the Cubs and Mets.
Tigers signed Tomás Nido to a minor-league contract.
Nido was released by the Cubs at the end of August, and it took a bit to find his new home. The 30-year-old will just be organizational depth, and if the Tigers sneak into the postseason, he won’t be eligible as he joined the team after August 31.
