Kyle Higashioka is making a second straight start behind the plate Tuesday against the Angels and left-hander Yusei Kikuchi.

It’s just the second time this season that’s happened. Jonah Heim is starting tonight, too, as he’s DHing against the lefty. While Heim and Higashioka split time pretty evenly over the first 10 days, Heim is getting more at-bats now; he’s started seven of eight games between catcher and DH.

Kyle Higashioka is starting at catcher and batting eighth for the Rangers on Opening Day.

It will be Higashioka and not Jonah Heim who gets the first start of the season behind the plate. This will likely be a close timehsare but given how good this Rangers lineup could be, it’s worth monitoring how the team splits up this workload. The full Rangers lineup is: Marcus Semien 2B, Corey Seager DH, Wyatt Langford LF, Adolis García RF, Jake Burger 1B, Josh Jung 3B, Kevin Pillar CF, Kyle Higashioka C, Josh Smith SS.

Kyle Higashioka blasted a pair of homers and drove in six runs on Friday, as the Rangers played the Cubs to an 8-8 draw in Cactus League action.

Higashioka got things started in the second inning with a two-out, 346-foot (97.7 mph EV) two-run shot off of Cubs’ starter Justin Steele to give the Rangers an early 2-0 edge. The 34-year-old backstop added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put the Rangers on top 3-2, then walloped a 428-foot (107.4 mph EV) three-run homer off of Phil Bickford in the sixth inning. Higashioka is off to a sizzling start this spring, hitting .500 (4-for-8) with seven RBI.

Rangers signed C Kyle Higashioka to a two-year, $13.5 million contract with a $7 million mutual option for 2027.

The deal is now official. Higashioka is coming off the finest offensive campaign of his career last season when he launched 17 round-trippers in 263 plate appearances for the Padres. The 34-year-old veteran backstop provides the Rangers with an excellent complement for starter Jonah Heim, who has started at least 127 games in each of the past three seasons. It’s a nice landing spot in a hitter-friendly ballpark, but he’s unlikely to play enough to make an impact for fantasy purposes outside of extremely deep two-catcher formats.
