Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Sunday that Devin Williams has been removed from the closer role for now.
Boone added that Luke Weaver will “get a lot” of the save opportunities moving forward, but didn’t rule out the possibility that he could still be used in critical high-leverage spots earlier than the ninth inning. The decision to remove Williams from the role comes after he melted down on Saturday in an ugly blown save against the Blue Jays, which left him with a calamitous 11.25 ERA in his Yankees debut. He’ll operate in lower-leverage spots for now and we’re not dismissing the possibility he turns things around and reclaims the role. However, it’ll be Weaver, who should be rostered in all fantasy formats until further notice, handling the closing duties moving forward.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn’t dismiss the possibility on Friday of removing Devin Williams from the closer role.
Boone’s noncommittal response to reporters came in the wake of Friday’s latest ugly meltdown where Williams was charged with three runs in a blown save against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old elite stopper said Friday that “nothing’s working right now,” after his latest implosion left him with a bloated 11.25 ERA through 10 appearances. It’s abundantly clear that he could use a bit of a reset, even if it’s only temporary. The Yankees will have a chance to think things over during Saturday’s rainout, but fantasy managers should anticipate Luke Weaver being in the mix for saves until further notice. He’s an obvious pickup in all fantasy formats.
Devin Williams was charged with three runs and his first blown save after failing to retire any of the three batters he faced Friday against the Blue Jays.
Brought in with a two-run lead, Williams gave up a single, hit a batter on a 2-2 pitch and then surrendered a two-run double. The Yankees quickly ushered him out at that point, and the runner later came around to score. Williams also gave up three runs last time out. That technically wasn’t a blown save, though it might as well have been. We imagine this outing will earn him a hopefully brief respite from closing duties, with Luke Weaver taking over for now and Fernando Cruz probably second in line. Dropping Williams in fantasy leagues seems like the wrong call, but it’s probably fine to bench him where applicable. Weaver should be picked up everywhere.
Devin Williams allowed four runs in the ninth inning to blow the lead against the Rays on Saturday.
Williams entered in the ninth to finish out the game with a four-run lead, a non-save situation. The 30-year-old right-hander imploded, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk to blow the lead. Williams had been pitching better of late, but his early season struggles have led to a 9.00 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, and an 8/7 K/BB ratio across eight frames.
