Japan's Softbank Hawks announce that they have officially signed Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Matsuzaka is headed back to Japan; a place where he hasn\'t pitched since 2006 and a place where he saw his greatest success. This most likely closes the door on his career in the major leagues and he is in line to finish with 56 wins, a 4.45 ERA, and 720 strikeouts in 790 1/3 innings pitched.
According to the Japan Times Daisuke Matsuzaka has agreed to a contract with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, who are the reigning Japanese League champions.
It is kinda like an end of an era. I mean \"Dice K\" was a thing in the Major Leagues especially when he took the league by storm a few years back now. Matsuzaka showed some promise this past season with the Mets, posting a 3.89 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings (nine starts and 25 relief appearances), but the free agent right-hander is probably going to get a bigger financial commitment from a Nippon Professional Baseball team than he would have state-side. If we don\'t see him again in the Major Leagues, he\'ll finish with a career 4.45 ERA in 790 1/3 career frames.
Daisuke Matsuzaka is on the verge of returning to play in Japan next season.
Dice-K had a moderately decent year for himself working between a starting role and that of a reliever. He posted a 3.89 ERA over 83.1 innings, but while he saw a slight uptick in strikeouts, he also saw an increase in the number of walks he issued. He\'ll probably be happier back in Japan and could return to full-time starter duty.
Daisuke Matsuzaka returned to action Thursday against the Nationals, making his first appearance since Aug. 30. He permitted one hit and three walks while striking out one over three scoreless innings of work.
While as a human being, you can appreciate Dice-K\'s return to the hill and be happy for him. As a fantasy owner, no one really cares. He\'s middle relief material right now and certainly not someone you trust in your lineup. Move along now. Nothing left to see here.
