Former Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts announced that he is planning to retire.
Roberts, 37, was released in August by the Yankees after hitting .237 in 91 games. Although he was apparently offered contracts by two teams, he turned the deals down. The two-time all star has been in decline for several years now, and it looks like he no longer can play at a high enough level to motivate him to stay in the majors. Roberts has had a great career with the Orioles, spanning over 14-years, and it wouldn\'t be surprising to see him eventually return back to baseball in some form.
Yankees unconditionally released infielder Brian Roberts.
And the Brian Roberts experiment is officially over. He was DFA\'d last week to make room for Stephen Drew and he was expected to refuse the assignment. Now released by the Yankees, he is free to sign with another team, though it\'s doubtful anyone is too interested in a .237 average with limited power and speed.
Yankees designate INF Brian Roberts for assignment.
After batting .237 with five home runs and seven stolen bases, Roberts\' time with the Yankees has come to an end. Stephen Drew will take over at second base full time and Roberts, if he clears waivers, will be asked to report to Triple-A Scranton.
Brian Roberts will be designated for assignment by the Yankees.
