The 31-year-old wasn't able to pick up a spring-training invite from any team after he batted just .221/.266/.345 over 158 plate appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization last season. Prior to that, Boesch had been a respectable platoon outfielder in the big leagues in stints with the Tigers, Yankees, Angels and Reds. Over parts of six seasons in the majors, Boesch hit .250 and amassed 48 homers, good for a career wRC+ of 89.

Brennan Boesch (wrist) was activated off the disabled list Friday and reported to Triple- A Pawtucket.

Boesch gives the Red Sox major league experience in the outfield and while he will be playing in Triple-A he could be an early call up as they look to add a left handed bat to their bench. Boesch had three solid years for the Tigers from 2010-2012 which saw him average 59 runs, 14 home runs, 42 RBI and six stolen bases with a .259 average. He spent the last three seasons playing sparingly for the Yankees, Angels and Reds.

Brennan Boesch's wrist surgery on Tuesday made things nearly impossible for the Red Sox to even consider keeping him up at the major league level. He brings his major league career .250 BA, 48 HR and 195 RBI in 1,577 AB back down to the minor leagues.

A tough blow for Boesch who was trying to make the Sox Major League roster. He's out for the foreseeable future and most likely will return and play for the Sox Triple-A affiliate.
