Peavy indicated earlier in May that he's no longer pursuing a comeback and has decided to end his playing career, Scott Miller of Turner Sports reports.

Peavy hadn't pitched professionally since 2016, but was believed to be exploring a return to baseball last season. The right-hander never drew any serious interest from MLB teams and has now formally ended a productive 15-year career that included three All-Star appearances, two World Series titles and one National League Cy Young Award. He'll step away from the game with a 3.63 ERA and 152-126 record across stints with the Padres, White Sox, Red Sox and Giants.

Peavy is interested in returning to the field in 2018 after sitting out this past season, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Peavy tried to latch on with an organization last spring, but was unable to find a home after posting a 5.54 ERA in 2016 with the Giants. During that season, he compiled a 1.43 WHIP and held a 102:36 K:BB over the course of 118.2 innings. In the event that he gets an opportunity somewhere, the 36-year-old could provide depth whether as a back-end starter or in a club's bullpen, but likely won't receive more than a minor-league contract for this upcoming season.

Peavy is going to throw a private session for visiting Marines in Arizona in the next few days, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The 35-year-old still refuses to close the book on his playing career, and although it's tabbed as a private session, it's hard to believe that some teams in need of starting pitching depth wouldn't do their best to be present. Peavy struggled last season to the tune of a 5.54 ERA and ultimately spent time as a reliever for the Giants, but his vast portfolio of major league experience could land him a job if he can effectively throw all his offerings.

Peavy, who is unsigned at this point, is still hoping to find a team to pitch for in 2017, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports.

After a rough year personally and professionally in 2016, Peavy is taking time to be with his family before he returns to the diamond. "It hurts not to be in spring training," Peavy said. "I know that day is coming, but right now being a dad is absolutely No. 1." The 35-year-old posted a career-worst 5.54 ERA across 118.2 innings with the Giants last year, but is hoping he is healthier and more well-rested for the upcoming season. He has said he is not yet ready to commit to a team, but he has been working out and will hold a showcase when he is ready.
