Shelby Miller allowed two runs on four hitters in one inning while blowing the save but picking up a win against the Phillies on Sunday.
Miller came into the day having not allowed a single run all season. He started the inning with a two-run lead and struck out Trea Turner and Bryce Harper to start the frame. Kyle Schwarber then clobbered a hanging splitter for a solo home run. Miller then allowed back-to-back singles to Nick Castellanos and JT Realmuto before Alec Bohm flared a bloop into center field to drive in the game-tying run. It was Miller’s first mediocre outing of the year, and still wasn’t really an awful performance. He remains the favorite for saves in Arizona with Justin Martinez out, but Kevin Ginkel will likely mix in for some opportunities as well.
Shelby Miller worked a perfect ninth a two-run lead to earn a save against the Mets on Thursday.
With Justin Martinez joining A.J. Puk on the IL, the D-backs used Ryan Thompson in the seventh, Kevin Ginkel in the eighth and Miller to close today. Miller got to face the bottom three hitters in the Mets order and retired them on just eight pitches. Ginkel struggled against better hitters in his frame, and he was allowed to throw 34 pitches despite having just made his season debut Wednesday after spending the first month on the IL. Miller has allowed only an unearned run in 13 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, and he might be the team’s favorite for saves for now. Health is always a question here, though. His closest thing to a full season in the last nine years was last year, when he had a 4.53 ERA in 55 2/3 innings before the Tigers cut him with a weak left in the season. The save today was just the fourth of his career.
Diamondbacks selected the contract of RHP Shelby Miller from Triple-A Reno.
Miller pitched extremely well this spring in Cactus League outings to land a spot on Arizona’s season-opening roster. The 34-year-old righty was in camp as a non-roster invitee. He figures to pitch in middle relief situations for the Diamondbacks.
Diamondbacks signed RHP Shelby Miller to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 34-year-old right-hander pitched for the Tigers in 2024 before getting designated for assignment in late September — posting a 4.53 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 49/13K/BB ratio across 55 2/3 innings of work. He’ll add another capable arm to the Diamondbacks’ late-inning mix and could potentially garner saves at some point if he pitches well.
