Ruggiano struggled in his 63 plate appearances with the Giants this season (.217 average) and was subsequently designated for assignment in early June. The 35-year-old initially accepted his assignment to Triple-A but has ultimately decided to opt out of his deal. He'll look to pick up with another organization if possible.

With the promotion of Austin Slater, the Giants needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, and Ruggiano was the casualty. He hit .217/.238/.333 with a 17:1 K:BB in 60 at-bats prior to the demotion.

Ruggiano sneaks in a start with Christian Arroyo resting against the Cubs right-hander Eddie Butler. This year, Ruggiano has typically hit lefties (.308/.357/.308) better than righties (.214/233/.464) in his short 2017 sample size, which just about corresponds to his career trends.

Ruggiano went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Saturday's win over Cincinnati.

Ruggiano just joined the Giants on May 6, and he's only started four games and made 20 plate appearances since. The 35-year-old veteran has historically been a solid contributor against left-handed pitchers (.276/.341/.527 career slash line), so he'll probably receive some starts against southpaws going forward. However, barring a long-term injury to another outfielder, Ruggiano is unlikely to be an everyday player.
