Kevin Gausman struck out nine batters over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Saturday.

It was vintage Gausman out there on Saturday. The 34-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit and issued one walk over six shutout frames. Gausman struck out nine on an excellent 16 swinging strikes. He’ll carry a 3.83 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and a 37/12 K/BB ratio across 40 innings into a start against the Mariners in Seattle on Friday.

Gausman was lit up for six runs over 2 2/3 innings, including a 53-pitch third inning, prior to being ejected from Sunday’s meltdown against the Yankees. The Blue Jays are going to give the ball to fellow veteran Chris Bassitt for Friday’s series opener against the Guardians with Gausman getting an extra day of rest.

The right-hander walked five and struck out two on the day and was not happy with the strike zone, which ultimately led to his ejection. The veteran only allowed two extra-base hits on the day, but he continues to struggle to locate his splitter, with just a 16 percent zone rate on the day. His four-seam fastball has been able to pick up the slack and carry him so far this season, but Gausman is not going to be useful to your fantasy teams unless he can get that splitter going again. It was missing for much of the 2024 season as well. If you wanted to move on from Gausman in shallower leagues, we would understand it. He gets the Guardians next week

Kevin Gausman struck out six while allowing four runs Monday in a loss to the Astros.

Gausman, 34, was able to generate a solid 14 swings-and-misses over his 96 pitches, but he dealt with command issues; walking three with 34 of those offerings landing outside the strike zone. The right-hander gave up up all four runs in the fifth, and outside of that it was a solid effort from Gausman. One bad inning can turn a strong outing into a shaky one, and Monday was evidence of that. He’ll take a 3.16 ERA into a scheduled start Sunday against the Yankees.
